Students Show Spirit in Beautifying New Orleans and Lake Pontchartrain
On Saturday, September 25th, some of the freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors abandoned their spirit week fever in order to participate in the Oceans Conservancy’s International Coastal Clean Up event called Beach Sweep. Students met at school around 8:30 in the morning and divided into five groups. These groups then went around the Ben Franklin High School area picking up trash and cleaning out storm drains. The area cleaned extended from Elysian Fields to Franklin and Leon C. Simon to Mirabeau. The students collected over twenty bags of trash and around a dozen bags of aluminum and plastic, which were brought to a recycling facility. To celebrate the success of the day, students were invited to a thank you picnic on the lakefront. Although the students who participated in this event did not get to help create their banner and door for spirit week, they contributed to something much more meaningful—the beautification of New Orleans and Lake Pontchartrain. |
